Legacy Awarded Four Stars from Golf Digest

Golf Digest has released the results of their Places to Play surveys for 2000 and Legacy Golf Course at Lakewood Ranch has received a coveted four-star rating. According to Golf Digest Places to Play, a 4-star rating is “Outstanding. Plan your next vacation around it.”

“This is the first year we have been included in this well-known golf guide,” remarked Keith Pope, Director of Golf Operations for the Legacy. “We are very excited to receive four stars from the readers of Golf Digest.”

Golfers Digest’s subscriber survey has been in existence since 1963. This year over 20,000 readers rated 6,000 public courses in North America on a scale from one to five, five being the highest. Of the 427 Florida courses listed, only 77 received a four-star rating, placing Legacy amongst the top 18% of highly regarded Florida courses. A team of editors tabulates the results and the Places to Play list is then published by Fodor’s.

“You can trust Places to Play because it’s based on real golfers’ real experiences,” said Bob Carney, Executive Editor of Golf Digest Special Projects.

The courses are rated on five criteria: overall golf experience, value for the money, standard of service, overall conditioning and the average pace of play for 18 holes. Readers are also invited to add their own comments good and bad. Here are some of the players’ comments about Legacy in the Places to Play review:

” A real gem… Very demanding test of golf… Very open to wind… Nice layout with water, water, water… Play twice, once to find trouble, then to keep score… Large greens.”

The Legacy was designed by Arnold Palmer and his team from Palmer Course Design Company. The same group, including lead architect Vicki Martz, is currently designing the private course for the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club, expected to open in November, 2001.
